I fell in love with seed beads when my auntie gave me a vial of apple green 11/0’s when I was nine years old. Not until I retired to the mountains of central Mexico in 2007 did I begin beading in earnest. I learned the stitches—Peyote Stitch, Brick Stitch, Right Angle Weave—and got inspired by indigenous beaders selling their wares on the streets of San Miguel de Allende.
I started experimenting with Czech glass beads of different shapes and sizes combining them with Japanese seed beads. Río Laja Jewelry Designs was born and I continue to bead by hand with a beading needle and thread here in Las Cruces. I make what I would like to wear, combining colors & materials, never repeating the same color design twice.
